Why Canva doesn't open in Russia

Opening canva.com in Russia typically shows a page that won't load, “Canva isn't available in your country”, or a blank screen after sign-in. This is not a device or network fault: Canva deliberately withdrew from Russia over sanctions and compliance. It first blocked all payments in the Russian market in March 2022, then in June 2022 — under pressure from the Australian-Ukrainian tech community and talks with the Ukrainian embassy — it fully withdrew and blocked Russian access indefinitely (co-founder Cliff Obrecht confirmed this publicly). Like Gemini's regional restriction in Russia, this is a service-side compliance withdrawal, not an RKN national-firewall block.

The key difference: Canva blocks “access”, it doesn't delete your designs

This must be said clearly, and it's good news: Canva blocks Russia's network access — it did not delete your account or your work the way some services do (contrast Notion, which terminates workspaces tied to Russian billing — a different mechanism). Your past designs, brand kit, templates, and uploaded assets are still in Canva's cloud, just walled off by the regional block. So once you switch to a clean exit IP in a supported country, you can usually get back both canva.com and your original work at the same time — this is an access problem, not (normally) a “lost work” problem. The prerequisites: a stable exit region, and an account that wasn't separately actioned for payment/compliance reasons earlier.

To be safe: export your important finished designs first

Although Canva does not currently delete Russian users' designs, third-party policy can change at any time, and it's unwise to bet everything on one platform that could shift its stance. Once access is restored, export your high-value finished designs to local storage first (PNG / JPG / PDF, and PPTX where an editable form is needed, or rebuild in another tool). Don't leave the only copy in the cloud. This takes a few minutes and protects your core assets against any future policy change.

Solution: what you need

You typically need: a node service on VLESS + Reality so the tunnel isn't DPI-fingerprinted or throttled inside Russia and the exit region stays stable; a sing-box class client matched to your device that routes canva.com, *.canva.com, and its static/asset domains through the proxy; and a stable subscription with a reasonable data quota (Canva is image / font / template heavy and uses more bandwidth than a text-only site). Step-by-step

  1. Copy your subscription link from the personal center or a digital card, import it by URL or QR into the sing-box client, and update the nodes.
  2. Pick a node with low latency and healthy status whose exit is in a supported country; keep the same exit region throughout — region jumps intensify risk-control and trigger repeated human-verification.
  3. Open canva.com in the browser and sign into your original account; if it's blank or loads partially, some static/asset domains probably aren't going through the proxy — switch to TUN mode to cover whole-device traffic.
  4. Once in, export a few of your most important finished designs (PNG/JPG/PDF/exportable PPTX) to local storage as a safety net, then continue working normally.
  5. If you use the Canva desktop or mobile app, make sure those apps' traffic also goes through the proxy (otherwise the web opens but the app stays stuck offline/loading).
  6. Confirm the device time and time zone are correct to avoid TLS-validation issues; a time zone that clearly mismatches the exit country can also intensify risk-control.

The payment and Pro reality (an honest note)

The good news is Canva has a free tier, so once access works, the free features and your existing designs work normally — the network-exit half genuinely helps you “open and keep using” it. But two things must be said honestly: first, Canva Pro / Teams needs a non-Russian payment method — Canva blocked Russian-market payments back in March 2022, Russia-issued cards are declined, and any earlier paid subscription may have lapsed back to the free tier; second, some paid assets and some AI (Magic) features may be separately limited by region/account status. Stability tips
