What most people experience: you open Zoom and get stuck on 'can't join meeting / Zoom is not available in your region' — you can't get into the meeting, can't host, and even sign-in is refused. The honest direction: this is usually not Iran's own DPI/filternet censorship, but Zoom excluding Iran by IP geolocation to comply with US export controls and OFAC sanctions — it treats access from an Iranian IP as a 'sanctioned region' and refuses service. This is the opposite direction from 'Iran blocks a website': what blocks you is a compliance block on the US side, not censorship on the Iranian side (same mechanism as sanctioned services in Iran and can't open Coursera in Iran).
Why a non-Iranian IP usually restores Zoom meetings
Because what blocks you is a regional exclusion based on IP geolocation, when you switch your exit IP to a non-Iranian, non-sanctioned-region address, Zoom usually stops treating you as Iranian access, so sign-in, joining meetings, hosting, screen share, breakout rooms and cloud recording mostly come back. The key is that this foreign IP must be stable and hard to fingerprint: a free proxy with a heavily shared entry point is easily flagged by platform risk-control, or throttled/cut mid-meeting — and for an interview, thesis defense or class, dropping mid-session is costly.
Zoom-specific: multi-party video + screen share, sensitive to both bandwidth and latency
Zoom is different from plain text or a simple voice call: its typical scenarios are multi-party video meetings, screen share, presentations, breakout rooms and recording — for remote work, online classes, thesis defenses, remote interviews and telehealth. This kind of real-time collaboration is both bandwidth-hungry (HD video + screen share at once) and sensitive to latency and loss: a hiccup on the line blurs the picture, breaks the audio, turns the shared screen into a slideshow, and at worst drops you from the meeting. Free proxies are usually congested, lossy and reconnect mid-session, so joining barely works but turning on camera and sharing falls apart. So for Zoom, a high-bandwidth, low-latency, stable dedicated line matters especially when the meeting is about your job or studies.
The key point: Zoom is mainly a standalone app — a browser extension can't fix it
Many people's first instinct is a free browser VPN extension, but that's often not enough for Zoom: a browser extension only proxies browser tabs, whereas most people use the Zoom desktop client / mobile app (more reliable and fuller-featured than the web version), which uses its own network connection and doesn't go through the browser — the extension can't touch the Zoom app. To make Zoom stable you need a system-level (whole-device) channel that routes every app (including Zoom and its audio/video and screen share) out through a foreign IP — that is the TUN mode below (see what is VLESS Reality).

This must be said honestly to avoid over-promising: changing IP solves 'can you use it', not 'can you pay'. Joining meetings, hosting, screen share and Zoom's free plan (40-minute limit per meeting) usually come back with a non-Iranian IP; but paid plans like Pro / Business still need a working non-Iranian payment card — Iranian bank cards won't pay on any IP, you need a non-Iranian payment method. The more reliable alternative: a system-level VLESS + Reality client
VLESS is a lightweight transport protocol and Reality is its TLS-camouflage layer, making your traffic look like ordinary HTTPS to a real, existing public website, so it's harder to fingerprint and target. Running a real client (sing-box / v2rayN / Shadowrocket) in system-level TUN mode means the Zoom app, its audio/video and screen share, and your other apps all exit through one clean foreign line; a high-bandwidth dedicated node makes multi-party video + screen share steadier with fewer drops; and it's harder for risk-control to fingerprint than a free proxy with a public entry point. Good news: meeting services are relatively tolerant of foreign/datacenter IPs (unlike Netflix, which actively blocks datacenter IPs), so as long as the IP is in a non-sanctioned region and the line is fast and stable, it usually just works. The cost is a subscription and a client. Two honest boundaries remain: paid plans still need a non-Iranian card, and during a near-total shutdown or a 'whitelist'-style national-network drill, any foreign channel (including VLESS) may fail to connect — no method can guarantee it always works.
How to use Zoom reliably in Iran: concrete steps
- In your user panel, copy your subscription link (for Iranian conditions, prioritise DPI-resistant VLESS+Reality nodes).
- Install a mature client: Shadowrocket on iOS, sing-box or v2rayN on Android / desktop, and import the subscription URL (don't add nodes one by one by hand).
- Turn on system-level TUN / 'virtual network card' mode so the Zoom app, its audio/video and screen share, and your other apps all go through the tunnel.
- Pick a stable node in a country where Zoom serves normally and which is not itself sanctioned (low latency, enough bandwidth) and run a latency test; multi-party video + screen share is bandwidth-hungry, so prefer a dedicated, stable line.
- Use rule mode: send local Iranian banking/government apps direct, and route zoom.us and its audio/video/media domains through the tunnel.
- Verify: sign in, join a test meeting, turn on your camera and share your screen once, and confirm video, audio and sharing are all stable and don't drop mid-session; for paid plans, prepare a non-Iranian payment method separately.
