The result is that many common VPNs fail the handshake, get cut after connecting, or work only intermittently. This usually isn't a device fault — it's protocol-signature identification plus network-layer interference together.

Why protocol choice is the key

OpenVPN, WireGuard and similar protocols have fixed handshake signatures; DPI can match those known patterns and block them without decrypting anything. In other words, the problem isn't encryption strength — it's that the traffic "looks like a VPN." In a high-interference environment like Iran, survival largely depends on whether your traffic can avoid being automatically classified as a proxy — which is exactly what protocol choice decides.
