First, what actually happened to Patreon in Russia (an RKN access block, not a company exit)
The lived experience is simple: Patreon's web / app won't open, and the membership posts and content you pledged for are unreachable. Here's the honest version: Patreon's access was blocked by Russia's telecom regulator RKN (Roskomnadzor) — it started when a Russian creator posted statements condemning the invasion of Ukraine, RKN demanded that Patreon remove the creator and their content, and Patreon refused (saying they had not violated its guidelines), so Patreon was added to Russia's block list and remains blocked. Unlike Spotify's 'the company pulled out on its own,' this is the Russian side cutting the traffic between you and Patreon at the network layer, not Patreon refusing to serve Russian users. The key point: since it's a network-layer block, a single IP that gets through the block and exits outside Russia usually restores access to Patreon. But keep in mind the other half covered in the next section — restoring 'access' is not the same as being able to 'pay.'
A duality you must be honest about: access vs payment (we only solve access)
Patreon differs from a plain 'blocked website': it has two layers of obstacle you have to separate. The first layer is 'access' — caused by RKN's network-layer block, usually solved by a stable non-Russian exit IP, letting you reopen Patreon and view the members-only posts / images / downloads of creators you already pledged to. The second layer is 'payment' — and a tunnel does not solve this: in 2022 Visa and Mastercard left Russia, cards issued inside Russia don't work abroad, and combined with Patreon's own sanctions policy, the result is that even with a foreign IP, a Russian bank card still can't pledge to / renew for creators. So be honest about two kinds of people: if you're a 'patron,' a tunnel lets you access unlocked content again, but a new pledge / renewal needs a working non-Russian payment method; if you're a 'creator,' whether you can receive payouts into Russia is limited by sanctions and Patreon's policy, which is even less something an IP change can fix. In one line: we solve 'access,' not 'payment' — worth saying up front so you don't assume a VPN fixes everything.
Why a free VPN / free proxy often isn't enough
The first instinct is a free VPN extension or a free proxy. It may help briefly, but in practice: one, free extensions / proxies use public shared IP ranges that are easily detected and blocked, and RKN keeps upgrading DPI (deep packet inspection) through 2026, so the first thing cut is an ordinary VPN / VMess / Shadowsocks with a public entry point; two, a browser extension only protects the browser, so the Patreon app on your phone still uses the real network and stays blocked; three, a lot of Patreon is long-form posts, image sets, audio / video, downloadable files, and a free node is congested, takes a detour, and shares bandwidth, so reading member content / downloading attachments is slow and keeps dropping; four, on privacy, a free extension can see all of your browser's traffic, with precedents of logging / reselling.
The more reliable alternative: a VLESS + Reality client
VLESS is a lean transport protocol and Reality is its TLS camouflage layer, disguising your traffic as ordinary HTTPS to a real, public website. Against a network-layer block like 'RKN blocked access to Patreon,' it does two things at once: one, it gets through RKN's DNS / DPI blocking — RKN mainly blocks by removing / redirecting domains inside the national DNS (NDNS) system and via TSPU deep packet inspection, and a Reality connection 'looks like it is just visiting a real, major site,' making it harder to auto-detect than an ordinary VPN with a public entry; two, it gives you a stable non-Russian exit IP so both patreon.com and the Patreon app open. Running a real client (sing-box / v2rayN / Shadowrocket) is system-wide, so both the web and the app go through the tunnel; and unlike services that actively hunt datacenter IPs (like Netflix), Patreon is relatively tolerant of VPN / datacenter IPs, so a dedicated node makes accessing member content more stable. The cost is that you need a subscription and a client; and to be honest again: a tunnel solves 'access,' but payment still needs a working non-Russian payment method, and during regional shutdowns / 'sovereign internet' drills any foreign channel (including VLESS) may fail to connect.
How to get access to Patreon again in Russia: step by step
- Copy your subscription link from the dashboard (prefer VLESS+Reality nodes for the Russian environment).
- Install a mature client: Shadowrocket on iOS, sing-box or v2rayN on Android / desktop, and import the subscription URL (don't add single nodes by hand).
- Pick a stable, dedicated, low-latency non-Russian node and connect (reading long member posts / downloading attachments needs steady bandwidth).
- Use Rule mode: send Russian banking / government (Gosuslugi) apps direct (they reject foreign IPs) and route the browser and Patreon through the tunnel.
- Open patreon.com or the Patreon app to confirm access and that you can view the member content you already pledged to; for a new pledge / renewal, separately prepare a working non-Russian payment method (a tunnel can't solve payment).
Honest expectations
- Patreon not opening in Russia is an RKN network-layer block (over a creator's anti-war statement and Patreon's refusal to remove it), not a company exit and not your connection; a stable non-Russian IP that gets through the block usually restores access.
- Restoring 'access' is not the same as being able to 'pay': Visa/Mastercard left Russia in 2022 + Patreon's sanctions policy mean a Russian card can't pledge / renew even with a foreign IP; a new pledge needs a working non-Russian payment method, and creator payouts into Russia are even more limited. We solve access, not payment.
- Don't use a free VPN to read member content / download large attachments — public IPs are easily cut by the DPI upgraded through 2026, are congested and take detours, and don't cover the app; a paid dedicated node + Reality lasts longer.
- During regional shutdowns or 'sovereign internet' drills, any foreign channel (including VLESS) may fail to connect and Patreon won't open either — that's unrelated to the protocol.

سؤالات متداول
- Is Patreon blocked in Russia, or did it leave on its own like Spotify?
- It's blocked, and the mechanism is the opposite of Spotify's. Russia's regulator RKN blocked access to Patreon — it started when a Russian creator made anti-war statements, RKN demanded removal, and Patreon refused, so Patreon was added to the block list and is still blocked. This is the Russian side cutting your traffic to Patreon at the network layer (not Patreon refusing to serve Russia). So a stable non-Russian exit IP that gets through the block usually restores access.
- If I use a VLESS tunnel, can I pledge to creators again?
- You can 'access' again, not necessarily 'pay.' A tunnel gives you a foreign IP to reopen Patreon and view the member content you already pledged to; but Visa/Mastercard left Russia in 2022 and, with Patreon's sanctions policy, a Russian bank card still can't pledge / renew even with a foreign IP. A new pledge needs a working non-Russian payment method. Honestly: we solve access, not payment.
- Why not use a free VPN for Patreon?
- A few reasons. One, free public IPs are easily detected and blocked, and RKN keeps upgrading DPI through 2026, cutting ordinary VPNs with a public entry first; two, a browser extension only protects the browser, so the Patreon app still uses the real network and stays blocked; three, Patreon is mostly long-form posts / images / audio-video / downloadable files, and a congested free node makes reading / downloading slow and flaky; four, a free extension can see all your browser traffic, with precedents of logging and reselling. A paid dedicated node + Reality lasts longer.
- I'm a creator — can a VPN keep me receiving payouts into Russia on Patreon?
- That's harder, and not something an IP change fixes. Whether a creator can receive payouts into Russia is limited by international sanctions and Patreon's own policy — that's the 'payment / settlement' layer, while a tunnel only affects 'access.' Honest advice: solve access with a stable non-Russian exit IP, but payouts need a compliant non-Russian settlement method, subject to Patreon's sanctions policy and your specific situation.
