First, what actually happened to Speedtest in Russia (an RKN network-layer block + Ookla's exit)
The lived experience is simple: speedtest.net / the Speedtest app just spins and never returns a result. Two overlapping things need to be stated honestly. First, in July 2025 Russia's telecom regulator RKN (Roskomnadzor) blocked Ookla's Speedtest on 'national security' grounds — the official line was that 'this American company collects data on the layout and capacity of Russian communication nodes, which can be used to plan, carry out and assess attacks on Russian networks,' and that Ookla had failed to comply with Russian data-localization law. Second, Ookla had itself paused its Russian operations during the #LeaveRussia wave. The result of both is the same: from inside Russia, the web Speedtest won't open. The key point: this is a network-layer block (RKN cuts the traffic between you and Speedtest), not Speedtest refusing Russian users — so a single IP that gets through the block and exits outside Russia usually restores access. RKN is simultaneously promoting a domestic replacement, ProSet (built by a government-linked body), but its download count and rating are both low (around 2.9 stars on the Russian store) and it is widely criticized as inaccurate.
A paradox unique to Speedtest: to test how fast your tunnel is, you first need this blocked Speedtest
Speedtest carries a paradox other services don't: you install a VPN / tunnel to restore blocked services, and the very first thing you want to do is test how fast that tunnel is — but the most popular tool for that, Speedtest, is itself blocked in Russia. So it becomes 'to test the tunnel, you first need the tunnel': one foreign channel that gets through RKN's block both restores Speedtest and becomes the tool you measure that channel with. That is exactly why free VPNs are especially bad here: one, free public nodes are routinely detected and blocked and may not even open Speedtest (they don't restore access at all); two, even if it opens, a free node is congested, takes a long detour, and shares bandwidth, so the numbers come out slow and wildly inconsistent — you can't tell 'bad line' from 'bad free node.' Speed-testing over a congested free node measures that terrible node, not your broadband. Three, a browser speed-test extension / web page only affects the browser; the Speedtest app on your phone still uses the real network and stays blocked.
What are you actually measuring through a tunnel? (an honest reading, so you don't misread the numbers)
This is the most misunderstood — and most important — point: when you run Speedtest over a tunnel, you are not measuring your home broadband's raw speed; you are measuring 'this tunnel's end-to-end performance.' Specifically: one, Speedtest defaults to the server 'nearest' the test target, and 'nearest' is relative to your exit IP (the foreign node), not to you — so the server's location and the path from you to the exit both count toward the result; two, latency (ping) includes the round trip from you to the foreign exit node, and is usually a bit higher than a direct line — that's normal; three, throughput is limited by the narrowest of three links: your broadband, the route to the exit, and the exit node's own bandwidth and peering. To read it more accurately, manually pick a Speedtest server near your exit node's location and take the median of several runs. And an honest closing point: a tunnel restores 'access' and helps you 'measure,' but it is not an accelerator — it usually adds a little latency to your connection and peak throughput may be slightly below an ideal direct line. Its value is giving you a usable and stable path in a blocked / throttled environment, not making your physical broadband faster.
The more reliable alternative: a VLESS + Reality client
VLESS is a lean transport protocol and Reality is its TLS camouflage layer, disguising your traffic as ordinary HTTPS to a real, public website. Against a network-layer block like 'Speedtest is blocked in Russia,' it does two things at once: one, it gets through RKN's DNS / DPI blocking — RKN mainly blocks by removing / redirecting domains inside the national DNS (NDNS) system and via TSPU deep packet inspection, and a Reality connection 'looks like it is just visiting a real, major site,' making it harder to auto-detect than an ordinary VPN / VMess / Shadowsocks with a public entry point; two, it gives you a stable non-Russian exit IP so both speedtest.net and the Speedtest app open. Running a real client (sing-box / v2rayN / Shadowrocket) is system-wide, so both the web and the app go through the tunnel, and a dedicated node gives numbers that better reflect that channel's real, stable level. The cost is that you need a subscription and a client; and to be honest: no method is guaranteed to work forever — during regional shutdowns / 'sovereign internet' drills any foreign channel (including VLESS) may fail to connect.
How to get Speedtest working again in Russia: step by step
- Copy your subscription link from the dashboard (prefer VLESS+Reality nodes for the Russian environment).
- Install a mature client: Shadowrocket on iOS, sing-box or v2rayN on Android / desktop, and import the subscription URL (don't add single nodes by hand).
- Pick a stable, dedicated, low-latency non-Russian node and stick with it — speed testing hates a node that swings good and bad; only a fixed node gives comparable numbers.
- Use Rule mode: send Russian banking / government (Gosuslugi) apps direct (they reject foreign IPs) and route the browser and Speedtest through the tunnel.
- Open speedtest.net or the Speedtest app to confirm it tests normally; for a more accurate reading, manually pick a test server near your exit node's location, take the median of several runs, and remember: you're measuring the tunnel's performance (including latency to the exit), not your broadband's raw speed.
