First, the honest part: what actually happened to Notion in Russia (a company block, not an RKN block)
In practice you see: Notion won't open / login fails, you can't register a new account from a Russian IP, and paid workspaces get suspended or prompt you to migrate your data. Here's the key distinction to make honestly: Notion was not blocked by RKN — the company itself, since September 2024, blocked IPs and workspaces from Russia to comply with US sanctions and export controls. So this is a "service-side compliance withdrawal + exclusion by IP region", not a Russian state-firewall block. It's the same class of mechanism as ChatGPT's regional restriction in Russia. The result for you is similar (it doesn't work), but the cause is different — and so is the fix, which is straightforward: you need a stable foreign IP so Notion sees you as outside the excluded region.
Do this immediately: export a backup of your Notion data first
Because this is a company compliance block (not a passing network hiccup), Notion explicitly warned it would delete Russian users' workspace data. So the first step isn't finding a VPN — it's backing up your data: once logged in (if you can't log in, restore access with the foreign IP below first), go to Settings → Workspace (or personal settings) → Export all workspace content and export as Markdown & CSV (or HTML). That way, even if the account has trouble again later, your notes, databases and docs exist locally. Back up first, then worry about long-term access — that's the most responsible order for your data.
Why free VPN extensions / proxies often aren't stable enough
The first instinct is a free VPN browser extension or a free proxy. It helps for a while, but in reality: first, free extensions / proxies use public shared IP ranges that are easily detected and throttled, so a sync-heavy app like Notion spins / fails to load / falls out of sync; second, a browser extension only protects the browser — your Notion desktop and mobile apps still go over the real network and still won't connect; third, Notion relies heavily on long-lived API connections and real-time sync, which suffer first when a public proxy is congested or drops, risking lost edits and conflicts; fourth, on privacy, a free extension can see all your browser traffic — and Notion often holds your most sensitive notes and material, with precedents of logging / resale.
The key point: to keep Notion stable, cover the whole device
Notion is used across the web, desktop app and mobile app, and depends heavily on real-time sync. To keep it stable overall, the channel should be system-level, dedicated, stable and low-latency — covering all of Notion's clients, not just one browser extension. The good news: unlike video platforms that actively ban datacenter IPs (e.g. Netflix), SaaS like Notion is relatively tolerant of foreign IPs, and its bandwidth needs are modest, so a single stable foreign tunnel usually syncs smoothly. As a bonus: if you also use ChatGPT, GitHub, Figma or Telegram — sanctioned-out or blocked services — a system-level solution covers them too.
A more reliable alternative: a VLESS + Reality client
VLESS is a lean transport protocol and Reality is its TLS camouflage layer, disguising your traffic as ordinary HTTPS to a real public website. Running VLESS+Reality in a real client (sing-box / v2rayN / Shadowrocket) works at the system level: Notion's web and desktop / mobile apps all go through the tunnel; a dedicated node makes real-time sync steadier with fewer lost edits; and it's harder to auto-throttle than a free proxy with a public entry point. The trade-off is you need a subscription and a client. Two honest caveats: first, no method guarantees it works forever — during a regional shutdown no foreign channel connects; second, we solve "access", not "payment" — the Free plan is already very capable and most individuals just need access restored, but paid plans (Plus / Business) still need a working foreign payment card, which a tunnel can't provide.
How to use Notion again in Russia: concrete steps
- Copy your subscription link from the dashboard (prefer VLESS+Reality nodes for Russian conditions).
- Install a mature client: Shadowrocket on iOS, sing-box or v2rayN on Android / desktop, and import the subscription URL (don't add single nodes by hand).
- Pick a stable node in a non-Russian region (low latency, low loss) and run a latency test; sync apps are sensitive to packet loss, so favour a stable line.
- Use Rule mode: send Russian banking / government (Gosuslugi) apps direct (they reject foreign IPs) and route Notion (notion.so / notion.site) through the tunnel.
- First export a Markdown & CSV backup via Settings → Export all workspace content; then log in and use it normally. To open a paid plan, separately prepare a working foreign payment card (the tunnel can't solve payment).
Honest expectations
- Notion doesn't work in Russia mainly because Notion itself blocked Russian IPs / workspaces to comply with US sanctions, not because RKN blocked it; a foreign IP solves the "access" half.
- Export a data backup first — this is a company compliance block that warned it would delete Russian workspaces; a local Markdown & CSV copy is safest.
