Why Tor keeps failing to connect in Russia
Tor's default connection (the public relay list) has been blocked by RKN (Russia's telecom regulator) since December 2021—to connect at all you need a bridge. But bridges are being squeezed too: obfs4 bridges are now DPI-detected and blocked by some mobile carriers, and WebTunnel bridges get whole-IP-range blocked whenever they sit at well-known hosts like OVH, Hetzner, Linode, or DigitalOcean. The root cause is simple: a bridge address must be distributable to users, and anything ordinary users can obtain the censor—Russia runs nationwide TSPU (ТСПУ) deep-packet boxes—can harvest in bulk and block one by one. Add Tor's inherently slow three-hop design and many people get stuck either "connected but unusably slow" or "connects and drops."
What Tor is genuinely good at (the honest part)
Don't treat Tor as the enemy. Tor's real value is anonymity—multi-hop relaying means no single node knows "who is accessing what"; it's free, open source, and during heavy blocks Snowflake can sometimes still squeeze a channel through. So when you truly need anonymity (journalists, activists, sensitive research), Tor is irreplaceable. What it is not good at is fast, stable everyday access—for streaming, calls, or browsing, three-hop latency plus blocked bridges make the experience poor.
Why Russia can bulk-block Tor bridges
The key mechanism: for a bridge to reach users it must be distributable; anything ordinary users can get, TSPU can bulk-harvest and enumerate to block. There's a Russia-specific twist: TSPU doesn't just block individual bridge IPs—it blocks whole datacenter ASNs at once, so bridges (and many self-hosted nodes) on Hetzner, OVH, DigitalOcean, or Linode often die within days inside Russia. Snowflake relies on a large pool of volunteer ephemeral proxies whose addresses are harder to exhaust, so it lasts longer—but it's being targeted too (the Tor Project built newer transports like WebTunnel and Conjure to stay ahead). When what you need is a stable long-lived connection, streaming, meetings, everyday access—or you find "Tor connects but is too slow to use"—it's time for a channel that is both fast and not dependent on a public bridge list.
The better fit for access: VLESS + Reality
The fundamental difference: Reality does not rely on an enumerable public bridge list. Your node is yours alone, and Reality disguises it as a genuine TLS handshake to a real, popular public website. TSPU has no "blockable list" of addresses, and active probing only ever gets a real certificate and real-site behavior—no proxy signature to flag. Being single-hop, it's far faster than Tor's three hops, which suits streaming, calls, and daily use. Two honest caveats: first, Reality is built for fast, stealthy access and does not provide Tor-style anonymity; second, your node still has to avoid the datacenter ASNs TSPU range-blocks (which is exactly why node placement and exit-IP reputation matter). The two can also be stacked—Tor over VLESS: use Reality to get out of the country, then run Tor on top. No method is guaranteed forever; a nationwide blackout severs both.
How to migrate from Tor (or stack it): steps
- Decide your goal: need anonymity → keep Tor; need fast stable access → make VLESS+Reality your primary; need both → use the stack below.
- Copy your VLESS+Reality subscription link (from your service or your own node).
- Install a client: Shadowrocket on iOS, sing-box or v2rayN on Android / desktop; import the subscription URL.
- Update the subscription and run a latency test; pick a low-latency, low-loss node. In Rule mode let Russian banking and Gosuslugi (government) apps go direct, tunneling only blocked services.

Honest expectations
- No tool works forever: Tor bridges get blocked, and Reality depends on node quality and operations—any single method can fail some day.
- Reality lowers the chance of being detected, but that is not anonymity; for anonymity use Tor (or Tor over VLESS).
- Russia's TSPU range-blocks whole datacenter ASNs (Hetzner, OVH, DigitalOcean, Linode are frequent casualties), so node placement often decides "can it connect in Russia" more than the protocol itself.
- It's not either/or: use Tor for anonymity, Reality for fast stable access, and stack them—choose by scenario.
