What a free Telegram proxy actually is
The "free Telegram proxies" you see posted in channels are almost all public MTProto proxies — a
Why these free proxies keep dropping — or aren't safe — in Russia
The problem isn't "free" itself; it's that the structure is a poor fit for a heavy-censorship network. (1) The server address is shared publicly — thousands use the same proxy, so RKN and ISPs can block or throttle these public nodes wholesale, and the one that works today may be gone tomorrow. (2) The operator is a stranger: an MTProto proxy sees your connection metadata, and a malicious one can inject ads, hijack a session, or log information — you can't verify who runs it. (3) Nodes overload and go offline, especially at peak. (4) Russia already throttles Telegram, so public proxies are a prime blocking target and tend to be short-lived.
When a free MTProto proxy is still good enough
If you just want casual, non-sensitive Telegram access and happen to have a public proxy that still works, go ahead — it's free and one tap. But if you need a long-term, stable, DPI-resistant connection, don't want to hand your account to a stranger, or need apps beyond Telegram (browser, YouTube, WhatsApp), a public MTProto proxy is structurally mismatched.
A steadier alternative: private nodes + VLESS+Reality (whole device)
For an environment like Russia, a better fit is private nodes that aren't on any public list with the VLESS+Reality protocol, using one client to carry your whole device's traffic (not just Telegram): Reality makes the traffic look, to DPI, like an ordinary visit to a big HTTPS site rather than "obviously a proxy"; node IPs stay private and can be rotated, so wholesale enumeration-and-blocking is far less likely; and the operator is the paid service you chose, not a stranger from a channel. This is not a "never blocked" promise — no protocol can offer that — it just closes both the easy-to-mass-identify weakness and the trust-an-unknown-operator weakness at once. To understand the mechanism first, see What is VLESS Reality.
Moving over from a free proxy
- In Telegram's Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy, first turn off or delete the public MTProto proxy you're still using so it doesn't fight the new client.
- Copy your subscription link (the whole URL) from your account page or digital card.
- Pick a client that supports VLESS+Reality and import the subscription: desktop via v2rayN import, Android via the Android guide, iPhone via the iOS guide.
- Refresh the subscription, pick a node that's both low-latency and loads full pages, then connect (allow the VPN configuration on first use). Telegram and every other app now go through this tunnel — no separate Telegram proxy needed.
- If local banking/government apps must go direct, exclude them with per-app split tunneling.
A note on WhatsApp proxies
WhatsApp has its own "Proxy" setting (Settings → Storage and Data → Proxy) with the same logic as Telegram's free proxy — it relies on public servers, and is just as easy to block and just as dependent on trusting the operator. If you're already on whole-device VLESS+Reality, WhatsApp rides the tunnel and usually needs no separate proxy.
Honest expectations
- No setup is guaranteed "always available"; the difference is how hard it is to auto-detect and block, whether someone maintains the nodes, and whether you trust the operator.
- A free public proxy's cost is stability, coverage, and trust: easy to block, Telegram-only, and it hands your connection to an unknown operator — not for sensitive accounts or long-term primary use.
- After moving to private nodes, if a site won't open, compare 2–3 nodes by full page-load success and then check DNS and routing rules — not just the latency number.

سؤالات متداول
- Is a free Telegram proxy safe?
- Public MTProto proxies are run by strangers who can see your connection metadata; a malicious one can inject ads, hijack a session, or log information, and you can't verify who runs it. Fine for casual, non-sensitive use, but not for sensitive accounts or long-term reliance.
- Why won't a free Telegram proxy connect in Russia?
- Its server address is shared publicly, so RKN and ISPs can block or throttle these public nodes wholesale; on top of that Russia already throttles Telegram, making public proxies a prime blocking target that tends to be short-lived — switching to another only helps briefly.
- What's the difference between an MTProto proxy and VLESS+Reality?
- An MTProto proxy covers only Telegram, relies on a public server, and is run by a stranger; VLESS+Reality uses a client to carry your whole device's traffic, looks like ordinary HTTPS to DPI, uses private rotatable nodes, and is run by the paid service you chose. The latter is steadier, harder to block wholesale, and more accountable.
- I only use Telegram — do I need a whole-device VPN?
- If you have a stable public proxy and only use Telegram casually, you can hold off. But once you care about long-term stability or account safety, or need other apps to work too, whole-device VLESS+Reality is the better deal — configure once, and Telegram plus everything else is covered.
