What "a VPN for Chrome" actually means

Chrome has no built-in standalone VPN; by default it follows the system proxy settings. So "putting a VPN on Chrome" really means routing Chrome's traffic through an encrypted tunnel or proxy. There are two right ways: (1) run a client on your machine (e.g. sing-box) with system proxy or TUN mode on, and Chrome uses it automatically; (2) use the official extension of a reputable service — the extension just points Chrome at a local or remote proxy, it doesn't "become" a VPN itself.

The right way: client + system proxy, Chrome follows

  1. Install the Univista client and import your subscription (see the Windows/v2rayN and Android guides).
  2. Turn on "system proxy" in the client; if some apps ignore it, switch to TUN mode (see TUN vs system proxy).
  3. Open Chrome — it already routes through the proxy with no extra setup, because Chrome reads the system proxy.
  4. If you have a proxy-switcher extension (SwitchyOmega, etc.), make sure it isn't overriding/conflicting with the system proxy — either point it at your local port, or disable it and let the system proxy take over.
  5. Verify your exit IP on an IP-check page, and watch for WebRTC leaking your real IP.

Why most free "Chrome VPN extensions" are a trap

When an extension is fine

The official extension of a reputable paid service, with your local client running, is fine — those are typically for "toggle by site" or per-app routing, pointing Chrome precisely at a tunnel that's already up, rather than acting as the VPN itself. Just don't rely on an unknown free extension as your only tool. For stability, prefer "client + system proxy / TUN," and turn on WebRTC-leak protection in Chrome.

Does Chrome have a built-in VPN?
No standalone VPN. Chrome follows the system proxy, so turn on the client's system proxy or TUN on your machine and Chrome routes through it automatically.
Do I still need a Chrome extension if I have the client?
Usually not — the system proxy already covers Chrome. An official extension only adds value when you want fine-grained per-site / per-app switching.
Are free Chrome VPN extensions safe?
Most aren't: they may log data, demand over-broad permissions, and leak via WebRTC. Prefer client + system proxy over installing a random free extension.
VPN is on but Chrome still shows my real IP?
Usually a WebRTC leak, or the extension only proxies part of the traffic. Switch to TUN so the whole machine tunnels, or disable/limit WebRTC in the browser.
